NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WKBW) — A man was found dead inside a stolen car in the Erie Canal Saturday night in the Tonawandas.
Authorities responded around 11 p.m. They found a vehicle reported stolen from Buffalo earlier that night floating in the canal with its headlights on.
The vehicle sunk before anyone could get to the vehicle, police said.
North Tonawanda police, North Tonawanda firefighters, the City of Tonawanda Dive Rescue Team and Ellicott Creek Volunteer Fire Department Dive Rescue team responded.
There is no word on where the deceased man was inside the vehicle, or what type of vehicle it was.
Police are unaware of anyone who actually witnessed the vehicle enter the canal.
The identity of the man will not be released until confirmation and notification of his family.
