TOWN OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Town of Tonawanda Police Department is investigating an alarming 911 call that ended up being a hoax known as "swatting."

Police say a young man told police dispatchers that he had shot his mother and was going to kill everyone, including himself. The call sent police to a home on Princeton Boulevard around 4:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Police were able to secure the area and speak with the homeowner at the residence of the reported shooting. That's when police went inside the home and verified that the call was false.

Police say activities at Kenmore West Senior High School were disrupted due to the incident, and the local neighborhood was also inconvenienced due to an abundance of caution.

"We're policing in 2019 so we know that these are one of many types of calls that we're going to receive and we're going to be prepared for everything," Town of Tonawanda Police Lieutenant Thomas Haynes said.
