SOUTH DAYTON, N.Y. (WKBW) — Pine Valley Central School closed Tuesday due to safety concerns after a shooting was reported near the campus.

According to state police, troopers responded to Route 83 Tuesday morning in the town of Cherry Creek for a possible shooting. Troopers say one man, identified as 53-year-old Nelson Noble, was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries. Noble is the owner of the farm where the shooting took place.

The school district released the following statement after closing school:

Pine Valley School District is closed today because of an incident at a farm near the school campus. Although the incident is unrelated to the school, we made the decision to cancel in consultation with the investigating law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement continues to be present in the community and on campus as a precautionary measure.

Our District followed all of the necessary safety protocols and response plans to ensure the safety of our students and staff. At no time were students or staff at risk. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and understanding in this ongoing police matter.

A Facebook post from the school posted early Tuesday says, "Stay Home and stay SAFE Panthers."
