BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The day of the snow storm it's always a mad dash to the grocery and hardware store to get everything you need to prepare for the winter mess.

Grocery stores like Tops an Dash's see an increase in sales of 20-30 percent when a snow storm is approaching. Workers at ACE Hardware on Summer Street in Buffalo say it's their slow season in the winter, but with a snow storm in the forecast, the store experiences a boost in sales.

Workers say the bread, milk and eggs of the hardware store are ice melt, shovels, and car scrapers.

Ice melt is the best seller by far, ACE workers say they have sold 6,000 lbs of ice melt and 15,000 lbs of rock salt this winter.

"We try to get more ice and snow melt and things like that," Antonio Brooks, ACE employee said. "That is the main thing people come and get."

Brooks says he also noticed people buying pipe wraps and products to make sure their pipes do not freeze in the sub zero temperatures.

"A good thing, some people like to take heaters and put it by their sinks to make sure their pipes don't freeze," Brooks added.

One shopper at Wegmans said "Snow is fine, 0 degrees is bad."
