WHEATFIELD, N.Y. (WKBW) — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) released its final remedial investigation report for the Niagara Sanitation Landfill in the Town of Wheatfield.
According to the report, it confirmed there are no off-site exposure concerns for neighboring properties.
The report includes the results of DEC's sampling of surface soil, subsurface soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater at the site.
"DEC works closely with communities across the State to investigate contamination and take all necessary actions to protect public health and the environment," DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said."The report on our comprehensive investigation of the Niagara Sanitation Landfill finds no off-site exposure to landfill contaminants. Governor Cuomo directed DEC to aggressively investigate this site to ensure the public is protected and provide this community with peace of mind that there is no off-site contamination."
The DEC held a public availability session Saturday to address questions from residents regarding the results and allow residents to get a close up look of the findings.
Residents in the area say their own testing tells a different story, they have taken legal action against the companies that dumped toxins into the old dump decades ago.
