BLASDELL, N.Y. (WKBW) — Blasdell Volunteer Fire Department will be one of more than 600 volunteer companies across New York State to participate in RecruitNY 2019 this weekend. The idea behind the open house is to collaborate with the community and gain recruits.
"We run between 400-500 calls a year," Blasdell Fire Chief Brian Gill said. The department also assists other companies in neighboring towns on calls.
Even though the Village of Blasdell may be small in size, many rely on the dedication of the Blasdell Volunteer Fire Department in times of need. At the moment, the department has around 40 members.
"We could always use more," Chief Gill said. An issue not isolate to the Village, but to volunteer fire departments across the state. According to a study by the Fireman's Association of the State of New York, without volunteer firefighters the tax payer would have to flip the more than $3 billion bill to pay for its absence.
"If there's a fire in you, please come on down and join us and take part in the family hood of the volunteer fire service," Edward Tase of the Fireman's Association of the State of New York said.
Blasdell fire company will hold its open house this Sunday, April 28th from 1-4p.m. at the fire hall. For a complete list of open houses, click here.
