Woman dead, driver charged after hit-and-run involving ATV and SUV

LEWISTON, N.Y. (WKBW) — One person is facing charges following a hit-and-run crash that killed the operator of an ATV in Niagara County.

Lewiston police responded to a call of a person struck in the area of Garlow Road near Hank's Smoke Shop around 2:15 Thursday morning.

When officers arrived, they found an unoccupied SUV with front-end damage. The operator of an ATV was found unconscious in a field about 40 yards away. She died at the scene.

Investigators located the driver of the SUV around 6:45 a.m. at an address in Niagara Falls. The 23-year-old suspect is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He was released to probation. The Lewiston Police Department has not released the suspect's name. 7 Eyewitness News has reached out to the department to ask why his name is being withheld at this time.

The victim was from the Tuscarora Reservation.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office Accident Reconstruction team is assisting Lewiston Police with the investigation.
