To come up with the numbers, Wallethub compared the 50 states across the three tax types of state tax burdens: property taxes, individual income taxes and sales and excise taxes.
The Empire State was ranked as follows:
- Highest total tax burden (12.97% of what New Yorkers make is paid out to state and local taxes)
- Highest individual income tax burden (4.81%)
- Sixth-highest property tax burden (4.57%)
- 21st-highest total sales and excise tax burden (3.59%)
