Local Sears, Kmart locations dodge latest round of closings

Posted

The Sears and Kmart names will not completely disappear from the Western New York landscape this year.

No additional Western New York locations are on the latest list of closings released today by Sears Holdings.

In all, the company has decided to close 63 unprofitable stores nationwide, including 48 Sears locations and 15 Kmart stores. Nine other unnamed stores, which were on the chopping block as recently as yesterday, were pulled from the closing list today and will be evaluated further. Sears Holdings said its closings list "will be updated as appropriate."

Today's news means the two remaining Sears locations in Western New York - at the Eastern Hills Mall in Clarence and the McKinley Mall in Blasdell - will continue to operate as usual. Sears is in the process of closing its location at the former Summit Park Mall in Wheatfield. Its Walden Galleria and Boulevard Mall locations shut down last year.

Kmart still operates four stores in Western New York - in North Buffalo, Niagara Falls, West Seneca and Batavia.
