A series of local prom dress giveaways are helping Western New York high schoolers look good for prom, without the hefty price tag.

On Sunday, high school girls had more than 1,000 prom dresses to choose from as Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon (R-District 9) and Urban Valet celebrated the 7th annual Prom Dress Giveaway.

The free shopping event gave local girls the chance to shop for a prom dress or other special occasion gown.

The gowns are donated throughout the year by members of the community, and are cleaned free of charge by Urban Valet.

Dixon said this event is meant for girls to have a fun, prom experience without worrying about the cost of a gown.

Hundreds of girls attended to pick out dresses on Sunday.

Colvin Cleaners is holding its own prom dress giveaway on April 18, 19 and 20 at Shea's Performing Arts Center.

The annual Gowns for Prom event will feature more than 3,000 gowns on-stage. Girls will be able to try on the gowns, select their favorite, and then have it altered immediately at no cost to them.

The Gowns for Prom event will take place Monday through Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
