Florida sheriff tells staff he's suspended for Parkland response, per report

Posted

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told staff on Tuesday that he has been suspended by newly-elected Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for his handling of last year's Stoneman High School shooting that left 17 dead in Parkland, Florida, the Miami Herald reported .

According to the Herald, his suspension was not unexpected.

“We know that he is telling everyone at the public safety building that he is going to be gone,’’ Broward County Sheriff's Office union head Jeff Bell told the Herald.

Israel has come under fire for his agency's handling of the shooting. A report released last week was critical of the Broward County Sheriff''s Office's response to the Parkland shooting.

According to the Herald, one issue the report highlighted was that deputies took cover instead of attempting to confront the gunman.
