A new $1 million mosque is set to be built in Niagara Falls. The city’s planning board approved Masjid Tawba Mosque plans to build during a meeting Wednesday night. The new mosque will be built at the corner of Pierce Avenue and 18th Street.

Dr. Mohamed Ahmed is spearheading this effort. He is an oncologist and medical director for Roswell Park Hematology and Oncology in Niagara County.  Ahmed said the project will be a force for faith, education, and outreach. Through outreach he hopes it will help to revive the community.

The 200 member mosque has been worshipping in a storefront building across the street from the spot the new mosque will be built, for more than 10 years. The building has been falling apart and making members feel unsafe.

The million dollar project will include a basement and mezzanine, with a basketball and volleyball court.

Once the construction work gets underway it will take up to a year and a half before it’s complete.
