A Wyoming County man is in jail after he allegedly hit his wife in the head several times with a small hammer, punched her in the face, and pushed over his 2-year-old daughter.

Deputies were called to Michigan Road in the Town of Arcade just before midnight after they say 31-year-old Joseph Craft assaulted his wife, hitting her in the face and striking her several times in the head with a small hammer. He also allegedly pushed down his 2-year-old daughter and threatened to kill both of them.

When his wife tried to call for help, deputies say Craft destroyed her cell phone. She later fled and called for help at a neighbor’s home.

Before deputies could arrive, the sheriff’s office says Craft took off. He was found Saturday morning around 9:30 and arrested for second degree assault, third degree menacing, fourth degree criminal mischief and endangering the welfare of a child.

He is currently being held in the Wyoming County Jail on $15,000 bail.
