DWI charges for woman who sought driving job

Police say a northern New York woman has been arrested on charges of driving drunk after trying to apply for a job — as a driver for a social services agency.

The Washington County sheriff's office says the 50-year-old woman went to a county office in Fort Edward on Wednesday to apply to become a Meals on Wheels program driver.

Senior Investigator Tony LeClaire says staffers smelled alcohol on her breath. They asked her to leave and called police out of concern she might have driven there.

She initially walked away, but the sheriff's office says a deputy saw her return about 15 minutes later, get into a pickup truck and try to drive away. Police say her blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.
