Deputies say in the middle of a conversation with the public defender following a DWI arrest, the suspect dropped the phone and ran out of the building.

The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office was called to Simmons Road and Rt. 20A in the Town of Perry around 11:15 p.m. Friday night after a car hit a utility pole and fled the scene. Deputies were able to locate the driver, 26-year-old Cody Belles, who officers say originally provided a fake name.

At the Perry Police Department, Belles was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident, refusing to take a breath test, DWI, and second degree criminal impersonation.

Deputies say Belles was talking to the public defender when he dropped the phone and ran out of the building. Officers were able to take Belles back into custody and he was additionally charged with second degree felony escape.

After being arraigned, Belles was taken to the Wyoming County Jail on $25,000 bail.
