An Albany County man is accused of throwing debris at police during a chase through multiple towns and raising a sword at a trooper, who then shot him in the abdomen.
State police say the incident started when 19-year-old Michael Messina of Loudonville threw debris from his car at a trooper on Interstate 87 in Saratoga County at 6:40 p.m. Friday.
State police pursued Messina south to the end of the interstate in Colonie. A short time later, police say the same vehicle was involved in an armed robbery at a liquor store. Colonie police pursued the vehicle to Interstate 890 in Rotterdam, where troopers stopped it with tire spikes.
Police say Messina ran off and eventually raised a sword at a trooper, who then shot him. Messina's in the hospital in stable condition. He faces multiple felonies.
