A 20-year-old man from Lockport will spend 60 days behind bars for beating a cat, leaving it with broken teeth and a fractured skull.
The cat, now named Varis, was found in June 2015. It also had a dislocated tail and investigators determined its toenails had been pulled out. Detectives arrested Skyler Brooks around two weeks later.
He was convicted of misdemeanor animal cruelty last Thursday and will spend 60 days behind bars, will have three months of electronic monitoring, 16 days in the sheriff’s work program, three years probation, and will be registered on the Niagara County Animal Abuse Registry.
Officials with the SPCA said they had hoped Brooks would be convicted of felony animal abuse, however, “it is rare that individuals receive jail time.”
Varis has recovered from her injuries and is now doing well.
