Buffalo Police have released the name of the University at Buffalo student critically injured in an early morning crash on Wednesday.

Buffalo police say an off-duty detective, on her way to work, hit 19-year-old Kevin Guichard in the University Heights neighborhood.

Police say the crash happened at Main and Custer about 6:00 a.m.

The detective, who has not been named, was in her private vehicle on her way to work.

The detective's status is unclear.

The department's Accident Investigation Unit is on scene trying to gather more details.

The university has issued the following statement regarding the accident.

The university is in close contact with Kevin’s family and friends, and we are providing whatever assistance we can during this very difficult time, including making arrangements for the family’s stay in Buffalo. The entire UB community remains hopeful that Kevin will make a full recovery from his injuries.

At this point, a cause of the crash has not been determined.

This is the second crash in about a month involving a member of the Buffalo Police Department.

The first was off Hertel Avenue, in early April, when a police officer hit and killed a woman on Good Friday.

A Go Fund Me page has been established to help cover Kevin's medical expenses.  To learn more or to donate, click here.
