Three deputies were injured in two separate attacks this weekend in the Erie County Holding Center, the sheriff’s office reports.
On Saturday, two deputies were delivering lunch to Jacob Melvin and say when they opened his cell door, the inmate attacked, repeatedly landing blows to the deputies’ heads and body.
Help arrived and Melvin was hit with pepper spray, which brought him to the ground where he was restrained.
Both deputies, who suffered several abrasions and upper body injuries, were taken to ECMC for evaluation. One deputy also suffered a leg injury.
Another attack occurred Sunday morning as a deputy escorted Marc Murphy for medical evaluation. When the deputy opened the inmate’s cell, authorities say Murphy charged him.
The deputy was able to bring Murphy under control using defense tactics until a response team arrived.
Both inmates are facing criminal and disciplinary charges and are being held in the segregation block of the Holding Center.
