The Erie County Health Department says it has received an increasing amount of rat complaints in neighborhoods.
The health department says so far this year it has responded to 3,036 complaints for rodents and rats. Officials with the health department attribute the rise in rats to the changing weather patterns like warmer winters.
The health department says property owners need to be aware of the open food sources they are leaving around unknowingly for rats to get into. Open garbage, fruit trees that are not tended to, and birdseed are the biggest culprits and keep the rats fed.
If you have a complaint about a rat in your neighborhood, you should call the Erie County Health Department at 716-961-6800.
