Five cats in the quarentine unit at the Niagara SPCA were found dead on Monday due to Felina Panleukopenia. None of the cats were up for adoption and were new arrivals that were being kept separate from the adoptable cats. Three of them were from the same litter.
The disease can cause death in cats in as little as one day and has a vaccine which four of the five cats had. The SPCA is worried that there was a problem with the vaccine.
In an attempt to avoid anymore exposure to the disease the SPCA has been treating the contaminated areas.
The SPCA will reopen as scheduled on Wednesday.
