NEW YORK (WKBW) — The New York State Thruway announced Thursday the board of directors approved a proposal to raise tolls on the New York State Thruway for some motorists beginning January 2021.

The thruway authority says with this proposal here's what you can expect:

  • If you have a New York State EZPass there will be no change to your toll rates (with the exception of tolls at the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge).
  • Out of state EZPass holders will pay a rate of 15 percent more.
  • Those who don't have an EZPass and use tolls by mail will pay 30 percent more as well as an additional $2 processing fee.

Nothing goes into effect yet, there will be hearings scheduled to get public input on the proposal.

The last time tolls increased was in 2010.

When asked in October about a possible toll increase New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told 7 Eyewitness News' Ali Touhey "I just don't know. And, I don't think (The Thruway Authority) know either."
