New York's governor is offering $1 million to the best proposal created by college students for using renewable energy to power their campus.
Andrew Cuomo announced the "Energy to Lead" competition on Friday. Three winning teams will each receive $1 million prizes to begin implementing their plans.
The contest will be operated by the State Energy Research and Development Authority as part of New York's efforts to spur renewable energy.
Submissions are due by April 4. The contest is open to student-run teams from private and public colleges, though a faculty member is required to formally submit the proposal.
Cuomo has set a target of producing half of the state's electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
