Study: Dozens of children hit by vehicles backing up every week

Posted

It's an accident that happens way too often.

According to kidsandcars.org, 50 children are hit by a vehicle backing up every week in this country. A majority of these incidents involve a relative or parent behind the wheel. More than 60 percent of those incidents involve a larger vehicle such as a truck, van and SUV.

That's what happened Thursday night in Buffalo, when an SUV hit 20 month-old Rian Davis just before 10 p.m. on Fernhill and Deerfield.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will require most new vehicles by 2018 to have a rear view camera installed. Senator Chuck Schumer has called on the federal government to implement this law to help prevent the 200 fatalities caused by vehicles backing up every year.
