HAMBURG, NY (WKBW-TV) — Nobody has a train set like Judd Wright of Hamburg. His train layout fills his basement-completely. It's powered by twenty transformers. Judd says "When you get old you need bigger toys because you can't see as well,"
The train set was designed and built by Rick Fisher at Artcraft Toy Trains in Hamburg. The cost was as much as a hundred thousand dollars but Judd admits he didn't really keep track of it.
Judd says he thinks he has about thirty engines, tons of track, too many train cars to count and possibly six miles of wire running under the table.
After he retired from a career with the Social Security Administration he acquired a family inheritance. He says it all started with his grandfather who was one of the founders of the Alden State Bank. Judd says "that financed this whole thing."
Sometimes he'll have open houses and share his amazing train set with other train enthusiasts. Mostly he says he just likes to operate the trains, adding "This is therapy for me."
