Now Making: The Sparkwork Studio

Posted

Catherine Southwick taught herself how to crochet.

"I went online and watched some videos," she said. I started making hats and scarves."

She quickly grew into designing and making baskets for the home.

"I enjoy certain things that have a function. They are beautiful but useful," she said.

Southwick first started making baskets out of yarn, but realized in order to do that would need to double, or even triple the yarn to get the sturdiness she needed. She found a distributor of cotton rope, and started making the baskets out of that material. One basket could use more than an entire spool of rope.

"I'm enjoying how I can manipulate through mathematics and how I can create a certain shape size or structure," she said. 'I've always enjoyed working with my hands and making things that are useful."
