One of Western New York's Variety children got some disappointing news in her battle with leukemia, and her family is asking for your help.
In January 2018, our young friend Isabella Phelan, of Lakeview NY, found out she's had a microscopic relapse with a leukemic mass on the outside of her left thigh bone. While doctors took a biopsy of the mass, the Phelan family was bracing for the possibility that she may need a bone marrow stem cell transplant.
Fortunately, Bella's big sister is a match, according to their mother Jamie Phelan. If she needs the transplant, that familial link will be highly advantageous. Medical experts who have reviewed Bella's case believe the leukemic mass may clear with the chemotherapy she is currently taking, according to Jamie.
Not all pediatric cancer patients are so lucky.
The Phelan family is asking all Western New Yorkers to consider being a bone marrow donor. You can apply online here.
