Police shot and killed a gunman who took hostages inside a Walmart in Texas on Tuesday.

"Suspect has been shot by Amarillo Police Department SWAT and is apparently dead," a statement from the Amarillo Police Department said at 12:42 p.m. Central. The incident had been ongoing for more than an hour.

At about 11: 30 a.m., reports broke that officers were responding to an active shooter situation at the store in Amarillo, a city in the Texas panhandle.

Amarillo's KVII-TV news reported that police asked the public to stay away from the area near the store so officers could focus on the situation.

At about 12:20 p.m., the Amarillo Police Department said there were no confirmed gunshot victims in the incident, in a statement via Twitter. Investigators also said the incident was believed to be a "workplace violence event."
