Volunteers recreating a craft from the past

The "Erie Traveler" will be headed to Lockport
Posted

More than forty volunteers are hard at work building a Durham style boat at the Buffalo Maritime Center. These types of boats used to be a common sight along the waterways  in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The boat was Chris Andrle's idea and commissioned by the Locks Heritage District Corporation in Lockport. Chris says that this has been a great learning experience for the men and woman who are doing the work.

Chris did the research and created some plans and they went to work in October. The boat has been dubbed "The Erie Traveler" and will be on display in Lockport in the restored portion of the historic "Flight Of Five Locks"

The project should be finished in mid-May. With 2400 man and woman hours invested, as well as eight tons of lumber, the big question is-will this fifty-one and a half foot boat float? According Chris Andrle, the man who started it all "we're hoping. the first question is can we get it out the door?"
