Weather apps to track the current storm system

Posted

Snow is falling across the Midwest, and those in the Northeast could possibly be getting the biggest snowstorm to ever hit that region in the month of March. It can be a challenge keeping track of the latest watches, warnings, forecasts and snow totals.

Two different smartphone apps, Storm Shield and SnowCast, can help monitor winter weather, and they'll notify you before storms arrives.

If you're wondering how much snow will fall at your house, work or anywhere in between, the SnowCast app does just that.

You can set up to three different locations and set to get notified when 1, 2, 5 or 8 inches is about to fall in the next 48 hours. That way, you can customize how often you'll get alerts — for every little snowflake or only until you're getting the "big one."

The SnowCast app also shows you if there is any kind of warning for your area — anything from a winter weather advisory up to a blizzard warning.

For all kinds of weather alerts ranging from winter snow to severe weather, tropical storms and more, the Storm Shield app provides life-saving weather alerts for your exact location and up to five additional saved locations.

As soon as an advisory, watch or warning of any kind is issued, the app sounds off with three loud beeps that's sure to get your attention no matter what you're doing at the time, giving you and your family time to seek shelter and prepare for any dangerous weather headed your way.

And for anyone without a smartphone, Storm Shield Phone Call Alerts is available to give you a call when a tornado or severe thunderstorm is coming your way.

SnowCast is available in the app store for all iOS devices. Storm Shield is available for iOS and on Android.
