Zoo found in East Amherst home

Posted

East Amherst home owner Mary Hughes is charged with two counts of animal cruelty after an SPCA raid at her Wellingwood Drive home last Friday.

Investigators say they removed more than 115 snakes, birds, fish, spiders, frogs, lizards along with other reptiles, amphibians and mammals, all living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions.

An Iguana had to be euthanized because it was in such poor health and several hundred insects were also removed from the property.  All are now being cared for at the SPCA facility in Tonawanda.

Hughes is set to appear in Town of Amherst Court October 13th.
