New Yorkers paying more for childcare amid the pandemic

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The COVID-19 pandemic has put immense strain on the finances of so many families, but one expense has increased substatntally since March 2020.

According to a new study from lendingtree.com, center-based childcare costs increased 31% across New York State during the pandemic.

Prior to the breakout, the average annual child care cost was $16,069 dollars per year, that number has risen to $21,005 since March. Across the state, 14% of household income goes toward childcare.

This increase is actually less than the nationwide average, which has jumped by 41%.
