BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Mid-American Conference has announced several updated policies due to COVID-19.
One of the biggest announcements was that the Conference has cancelled regular season and championship competition, and non-traditional season competition for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year. They've also suspended formal and organized practices until further notice.
The news comes hours after the MAC Tournament, taking place in Cleveland, was cancelled mid-tournament amid coronavirus concerns.
In a statement, UB Athletic Director Mark Alnutt said, “During this unprecedented public health crisis that continues to evolve daily, we fully support the decision made today by the Mid-American Conference and the NCAA. While we are disappointed for our student-athletes, coaches and staff who have worked diligently to prepare this spring and have had their seasons cut short, their health, safety and well-being will always be our top priority."
The MAC also announced the suspension of off-campus recruiting activities and official and unofficial visits.
Regarding recruiting and unofficial visits, UB football coach Lance Leipold said, "As always, the safety of our student athletes, staff, and future student athletes is of the utmost importance to our football program. We fully support the measures that UB and the MAC have put into place regarding the suspension of recruiting activities until deemed appropriate."
