Hunter, who played for six teams during his 17 year NBA career, won titles with Los Angeles (2002) and Detroit (2004).
He replaces former UB assistant Donyell Marshall who took the head coaching job at Central Connecticut in April.
The past few seasons Hunter has served as an assistant with Phoenix and Golden State. He was named the interim head coach of the Suns during the 2012-2013 season.
Hunter was the 10th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft.
