The Bulls played without star guard CJ Massinburg, who is out indefinitely as he battles the illness mono.
Kahlil Dukes scored eight of his 13 points in the first half to help the Purple Eagles open up a 33-31 halftime lead.
Matt Scott tallied a team high 21 for Niagara.
The Bulls (1-0) travel to Xavier on Nov. 14, while Niagara (0-1) heads to Providence, Rhode Island, to battle Brown University.
