BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Storm system approaching will result in impressive wind gusts for all of WNY Sunday into Monday:
High Wind Warning from 7AM Sunday through 10AM Monday for Erie, Niagara, Orleans and Genesee counties and from 10AM Sunday through 4AM Monday for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany and Wyoming counties. This excludes Potter and McKean counties in PA. Southwest winds between 35-45mph and gusts near 75mph.
Lakeshore Flood Warning for Erie, Chautauqua and Niagara counties from 7AM Sunday through 4AM Monday. Strong southwest winds will cause Lake Erie waters to rise on the eastern end and cause ice to shift.
Sunday Morning: Winds will increase out of the south and gust 30 to 40 mph.
Sunday Afternoon: Winds becoming more southwesterly and increasing. Winds gusting 60 to 70 mph.
Sunday Night: Westerly winds gusting near 70 mph!
Monday Morning: Winds still very strong now out of the west/northwest with gusts 50 to 60 mph!
Winds this strong will snap branches and cause some trees to come down Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. The strongest wind gust in Buffalo was 82mph on February 16, 1967.
The most recent high wind event which lead to a 75mph wind gust happened over 10 years ago, December 28th, 2008. 5 of the top 10 highest wind gusts record happened over 30 years ago in the 80s!
