BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — There will be no shortage of things to do this upcoming weekend as several festivals are taking place around WNY.

Buffalo will be holding the Galbani Italian Heritage Festival, Water Latern Festival, and Grease Pole Festival.

Canal Fest is continuing in the Tonawanda's.

And it is BurgerFest weekend in Hamburg.

However, an extreme wave of hot temperatures, with heat indexes over 100 degrees, will make attending the festivals challenging.

Organizers are taking steps to make sure there are tents and shaded areas, along with fans and misters.

Festival goers are encouraged to take steps to protect themselves from the high temperatures by:

-Wearing hats
-Wearing light-colored clothing
-Use sun screen
-Drink plenty of water
-Consider bringing umbrellas as they can be a great way to get portable shade.

The SPCA is urging people to not bring pets to festivals and keep the animals at home with fans or air conditioners.

Paws can be severely damaged on hot sidewalks and pavements, even when air temperatures seem tolerable.

7 Eyewitness News Reporter Ed Reilly used a special heat-sensing lazer thermometer and found the pavement temperature in a local parking lot was over 120 degrees, even though the air temperature was only in the mid-80's.

Ed spent the day talking with festival organizers about heat preparations.
